Skin can look calm in a jar and feel wrong on a cheek, which is where Renée Rouleau starts. Thirty years after a treatment room outside Boston, she still runs Renée Rouleau Skin Care from Austin with a small crew, nine skin types, and a habit of judging a formula by touch first. We talked texture, objects and ritual.

The setting shapes the work. Renée Rouleau Skin Care operates from 2120 West Braker Lane, Suite F, in Austin, Texas, with eighteen to nineteen staff, after earlier periods outside Boston and then in Dallas. The space functions as treatment room plus formulation partnership plus writing desk, held together by design. Jars stay visible. Pumps get weighed in the hand.

Rouleau finished esthetics school more than thirty years back and opened her first spa at twenty one alongside a mentor, sold that business after five years and relocated to Texas to restart. The range came out of faces she touched. Dry, normal and oily never described what she saw, so she drew nine types and created a quiz that pairs routine with type.

What holds our attention, across interviews and product pages read for feel, is how tactile her fixes are. Fruit gives the peel its jammy slip and its post facial light. Elderberry gives the toner its watery cushion for redness and sensitivity. Acids sweep the pore, plants soften the barrier, and the sequence links the two. This talk stays with those material choices.

Your nine skin types and the Skin Type Quiz started from the belief that one size does not fit all, and you ask, if you do not know your skin type, are you even getting results, how does that method shape the way someone picks a cleanser or a peel?

The choice gets slower, which helps the skin. Instead of shopping by worry alone, you shop by type plus worry. An adult with blocked pores and sensitivity calls for separate strength and cadence than a teen with blocked pores. The quiz handles that. It reviews oil, breakouts, redness, discoloration, dryness, then it sets you into one of nine types.

When your skin type is still a mystery, are your products really working. The line sounds blunt, but it stays useful. A peel applied too often on a reactive type can sustain redness. A cleanser that strips can prompt oil to rebound. Once type is settled, we can arrange the ritual. Cleanse in the fitting manner, exfoliate at the fitting pace, moisturize in the fitting weight. The Renee Way means personal fit, not extra bottles.

Your best selling AHA BHA Blemish Control Cleanser earned an Allure Best of Beauty award and blends alpha and beta hydroxy acids in a daily wash for bumps, blackheads and discoloration, why place exfoliating acids in a cleanser instead of keeping them only in serums and peels?

Because cleansing prepares the surface. When oil and buildup remain along the pore wall, each layer placed after must push harder. A light daily measure of AHAs and BHAs loosens dead cells during the wash, so pores appear clearer and tone appears more even with time. It offers routine care instead of a single intense weekly moment.

That cleanser turned into our top selling cleanser and our first beauty award winner. Apply it as a daily cleanser to lift oil and buildup while it exfoliates. Keep water lukewarm, work it for around a minute, rinse fully. Across our nine types, above all those tending toward bumps and blackheads, that evening reset leaves the remaining ritual uncomplicated.

Anti Bump Solution was the product that began everything and thirty years later remains your number one best seller with more than 250,000 users, what concern were you trying to ease in the treatment room when you first created it?

Guests arrived with those deep sore bumps under the surface that never form a head. They ache, they stay, and squeezing only aggravates them. Inside the treatment room I could settle the zone, maintain clean skin, and encourage recovery without pulling at it. I sought a take home dab they could press on at the first pulse.

That is the origin of Anti Bump Solution. It remains our number one best seller, which shows me the issue never left. Pat it right onto the spot to reduce the look of swelling fast. Leave fingers away. Hold the rest of the ritual soft. It reflects my method. Ease the urgent concern, then balance the full face so fewer bumps appear.

Triple Berry Smoothing Peel was made to carry that exfoliated post facial glow home, with fruit to smooth, resurface and brighten, how should someone apply it so the harvest delights without overdoing it?

I built it for that day after facial sensation, when texture feels even and light travels across skin. Fruit supplies natural acids plus a sensory signal that this is a treatment, not an everyday cream. It smells berry good, which prompts people to pause. At home, that pause counts. Smooth a sheer coat over clean skin, hold for the duration printed on the label, rinse fully, then hydrate.

Across most types, once weekly suffices. When your type leans sensitive or dry, apply less often and notice how skin answers the following morning. Avoid stacking strong exfoliating serums that same evening. Next morning, apply sunscreen. A peel resembles steeping. You seek full flavor, then you strain. Brightness ought to arrive with comfort, never with lasting tightness.

It smells berry good, which invites people to linger.

You opened your first skincare spa outside Boston at twenty one, after a coworker and mentor invited you to open a business together, then sold it after five years and moved to Texas to start again, what did those early treatment room years show you about skin that still guides the brand today?

I began with a treatment room, palms on skin, studying one face at a time. That base never leaves me. Viewing skin closely, day by day, shows that terms like dry or oily reveal almost nothing. Pores act one way across the forehead and differently across the cheeks. Sensitivity shifts with seasons and stress. Breakouts pass through phases. I continued to ask, what does this skin truly require, right now.

Thirty years ago, I launched this business with a treatment room, a belief that knowing your skin type could change everything, and a readiness to keep studying. I stay in motion and test everything. Staying highly solution oriented is what sets me apart. I exist to serve them, and I have always viewed it that way. I truly love what I do and I believe I love what I do now more than ever. I can not ever picture myself not doing it.

Elderberry Soothing Toner offers antioxidants and hydration to soften the look of redness and sensitivity, what pulled you toward elderberry for this step, and where does a toner rest in the ritual?

Toner acts as the drink following the wash. Once cleansing ends, skin requests water and ease before serum. Elderberry suited the need because it offers antioxidants plus hydration inside a sheer veil that sensitive types accept. It supports the appearance of reduced redness while skin stays damp, so later layers glide on and rest comfortably.

I develop with chemists, yet I begin from skin type and concern. What does this skin truly require. For redness prone types, it asks for reduced friction and steadier moisture. Press toner in using palms, without dragging with cotton. Then layer serum while skin remains supple. Roots grip soil after rain. Picture toner in that role. It quiets the surface so the following step can settle.

The BHA Clarifying Serum is a leave on exfoliating serum to clear clogged pores and soften the look of discoloration, when you decide between that nightly serum and the weekly berry peel, what steers you?

Tempo and location. A peel performs a field clearing. It refinishes the surface so texture appears smooth and light bounces. A BHA serum performs row work. It remains on skin and holds the pore lining clear steadily, which supports ongoing blackheads and the marks breakouts leave.

I consider what the type presents. When texture feels rough and glow drops by midweek, the peel might help. When pores block in repeat zones and spots cast shadows, the leave on serum might help more. Certain types employ both, on separate evenings, with rest evenings between. Introduce slowly, one fresh exfoliant at a time. When skin feels tender, pause. The aim is clear pores beside a calm barrier, not endless activity.

Your blog became your number one marketing strategy through organic search, and you were noted as the first esthetician based company to offer virtual skin consultations, how does teaching in plain language relate to the plants and acids inside the bottles?

Instruction forms the second half of the formula. A bottle only performs as hands permit. When someone applies too much, too often, even fine ingredients disappoint. So I compose as I speak inside the treatment room. How to cleanse. How long to keep a masque. How to distinguish dryness from dehydration.

Going virtual allowed us to view skin in home light and learn about routines as lived. Then we can indicate the right texture and the right timing. Acids to hold the pore clear. Elderberry plus light moisture to hold the look calm. Niacinamide plus restorative oils in our Moisture Infusion Toner to jump start the look of barrier repair. Plants count due to their role in that order. Schooling keeps the ritual truthful.

You stayed one hundred percent founder owned in Austin with a team of eighteen to nineteen people, say no to about ninety four percent of opportunities, and write that you do not chase trends or viral moments, what has that restraint made possible in how you formulate and source?

It keeps me near the bench. I never want to trade what I believe for a bigger paycheck. I prefer to remain small and be a damn good brand over expanding fast and dropping the thread. We avoid chasing trends or viral moments. The phrase sounds plain. In daily terms it involves declining a lot, near ninety four percent of incoming offers, so the rare yes receives complete attention.

Formulation requires duration. You select the skin type, you outline what results ought to show, you trial textures, you refine. With fruit acids you monitor strength and pH. With calming plants you monitor sourcing and stability. With all components you monitor layering. Our expansion sprang from gifting to friends and family, then from a blog that solved real questions and drew readers via search. Slow roots hold.

Closing note from the desk

What remains is touch as method. Type first, then worry, then ritual. Rouleau has asked matching questions for thirty years and allowed the responses to guide compact, practical formulas instead of a crowded shelf.

She aimed to offer adult breakouts and sensitive skin a gentler route toward clarity, with fruit when texture asks for lift and elderberry when redness asks for rest, fitted to nine types so fewer people must guess. That modest labor happens in Austin, and it shows on skin.
