Three to four drops on damp skin. That small measure opens the Eadem story, cool milk that spreads thin and sinks fast and leaves a soft sheen behind.

Three to four drops on damp skin. That is where to begin with Eadem, not with a claim but with a feel. A thin milk, a damp cheek, a finish that looks rested rather than coated.

Marie Kouadio Amouzame and Alice Lin Glover met while working at Google and found common ground in immigrant families from Ivory Coast and Taiwan and in frustration with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The project started in 2018 as a lifestyle blog for women of colour, then turned into skincare with a first release on May 20, 2021. The slow build shapes the textures that followed.

The range today is compact and made for melanin-rich skin. The pledge is worded with care. Soften the appearance of dark spots while leaving natural skin color alone. It leaves out bleaching agents and hydroquinone, and it stays fragrance free, vegan, cruelty free and light on pores. Their shorthand for the aim is brighter not lighter.

The part you feel first is backed by sourcing patience. Milk Marvel went through 25 versions with a woman of colour formulator and a dermatologist. A formula takes about two years, more or less. The team builds from scratch instead of buying from a catalog. In a fast category, that pace feels like tending soil.

Mami Wata comes in 100 mL for 44 dollars with cica, ectoin and panthenol, meant for use through the day even over makeup. So where does a mist belong in a routine when skin feels stressed and sensitive.

Mami Wata is our rescue mist, named for the water spirit, and made for days when skin feels sensitive and tired. Cica helps skin look calm. Ectoin helps skin look hydrated through dry air or office heat. Panthenol supports softness. It is barrier first care in a spray.

Apply it to clean skin before serum when skin feels tight, or over makeup in the afternoon when everything looks dry. Hold it a hand width away, spray lightly, let it settle, then press. It will not stand in for moisturiser. It freshens the layer between steps. For skin that flushes easily or prickles after cleansing, that midday pause can change how the rest sits. Leave the full size by the sink and slip the mini into your bag. Small steady sips suit it better than flooding.

I built Milk Marvel through 25 iterations with a woman of colour formulator and dermatologist Dr. Ann Brewer, after I started Eadem as a blog in 2018 and launched the serum on May 20, 2021. What did those early talks teach you about post inflammatory hyperpigmentation that a brief could never hold.

We felt we had something early when we talked with countless women of colour and heard the same story. Across the shelves, it felt like nobody was speaking to us, which felt wild. It began with two friends, yes, but it grew because the need felt shared.

For me, for years I reached for hydroquinone for my hyperpigmentation without knowing the harmful side effects. I believed strength had to feel harsh. Many of us were handed studies of older white users with age spots and told to map that onto our faces. When we say melanin rich it is not only about skin colour. It is more about the way skin behaves. It marks, it keeps the mark, it takes time to let it go.

So we started with PIH at the center. We asked what a dark mark needs to fade gently. Soft resurfacing, steady brightening, barrier support. We tested on our own panel to earn trust on our skin. It is about tracing shared stories and skin needs among women of color, then formulating with care.

Milk Marvel feels weightless and milky, 30 mL for 68 dollars, with 3 to 4 drops on damp skin morning and night before moisturiser and SPF. Why that milky slip and that damp skin step, and what should the first two weeks feel like.

Feel sits inside the formula, not on top of it. We wanted something that glides easily, layers without pilling, and leaves a soft glow rather than a film. A milk format lets us hold both water loving and oil loving ingredients so they spread evenly. On damp skin, those 3 to 4 drops travel further and settle more comfortably. Then a moisturiser, then morning SPF on top.

In our own research we saw fading at 14 and 28 days, and 95.2 percent of 50 women with deeper tones said they would share it. That does not mean marks disappear in two weeks. It means skin can begin to look clear, even and rested. Papain and bromelain help smooth the look of texture. Niacinamide and vitamin C derivative help radiance build over time. Use it twice a day, softly, and let the routine do the work. If skin feels tight, the dose was heavy or cream was skipped. Three drops covers most faces.

Your about page holds two taglines, Science Meets Soul and More Than One Thing Can Be True, with three pillars named Proof, Formula, Experience. How do those words guide a lab choice when a plant extract and a lab made active could both work.

We question everything. That line sits on the page for a reason. Science Meets Soul feels true to us daily. It is a method. Proof means we test with the people we create for. Formula means we build each blend from zero. Experience means texture, scent, layering, all of it must feel respectful.

More Than One Thing Can Be True means a plant extract and a lab made active can share one bottle if each earns its place. Niacinamide helps tone look even and helps skin hold moisture. Encapsulated vitamin C, 3 O ethyl ascorbic acid, gives antioxidant support with better steadiness in formula than some forms of pure ascorbic acid. Then we turn to plants for what they do best. Licorice root for the look of brightness. Papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple help soften the look of rough buildup so skin looks smoother.

We do not pick a plant because it is a plant. We pick it for what it adds to the blend, at a level skin can welcome morning and night.

You speak of amber algae, listed as plankton extract, with the claim it can sense excess melanin in production, and only trim that. What does that idea mean in real life for someone who fears lightening.

Because women of colour were long an afterthought in beauty, we had to break fully from the norm. That history is why the fear of lightening feels real. Many brightening products were built on bleaching agents. We promised no hydroquinone and no bleaching agents. Our set is named Brighter Not Lighter with intent.

The amber algae can sense excess melanin in production, and only trim that. That is how Alice describes what she meant. In use, see it as softening the look of excess. The formula is meant to fade the look of dark spots and post acne marks while nearby skin still looks like itself. Honokiol and magnolol, the two main compounds in magnolia bark extract that we gather under our Smart Melanin Technology term, give antioxidant and soothing support. Licorice helps support a bright and lively look. It acts as a chorus, never as a bleach.

We are not trying to shift natural skin color. We are trying to help a mark blend back in.

Texture belongs to the formula, not decoration.

Cloud Cushion arrived in February 2022 and the pages show a price clash, 48 dollars on one list and 58 dollars in the title, with plant ceramides, tucuma extract, snow mushroom, tetrapeptide 30 and niacinamide. What role did you want a moisturiser to play after an active serum.

After Milk Marvel, skin wanted a cushion, literally. Cloud Cushion is a 50 mL cream to calm, drench and leave skin plump and dewy. The serum handles the refining and brightening work. The cream keeps the goodness sealed in.

Plant ceramides help hold moisture so skin looks comfy not stripped. Tucuma extract, from a palm fruit, adds emollient softness. Snow mushroom holds water and gives that bouncy slip without weight. Tetrapeptide 30 plus niacinamide support a more even look. It feels plush to the touch and layers cleanly over 3 to 4 drops of serum.

We love routines that feel like care, not fixing. Serum, then a soft seal, then daytime SPF. If your barrier feels happy, tone looks better too, because light bounces best off calm, hydrated skin.

You have said development takes about two years, more or less, and that you build formulas from scratch rather than buying them from a catalog and tweaking a few things. What feels harder on that path, from soil to stability.

We make our formulas from scratch rather than buying them from a catalog and tweaking a few things. That means we pick each extract, each level, each pH and texture goal. A catalog base is faster. From scratch takes about two years, more or less, because plants shift by harvest and actives interact.

Licorice root acts differently by source and cut. Enzymes like papain and bromelain need care to stay gentle. Encapsulated vitamin C needs shelter from light and air. Milky creams need time to show they will not split. We build through many rounds, Milk Marvel took 25, because small shifts alter spread, glow and comfort.

Made in an FDA approved facility, as reported, gives shape, but the discipline stays ours. We take notes, we test again, we refine. Tinkering over ad spend, always. It is slower. The finish sits better on melanin rich skin because it was made for it.

Labs first quoted 20,000 dollars extra to test on diverse skin tones, and you picked a custom panel instead. What did that panel shift inside Milk Marvel.

I would say that 99 percent of people never answer your emails unless you know someone. Labs were no different. When we asked for varied panels, we heard it would add 20,000 dollars. That shows you what the usual path was. We had no traditional VC funding, so it has really been about tinkering and learning what works, versus pouring a million dollars into ads and watching what happens.

The custom panel changed everything. Women with deeper tones used the serum as told, 3 to 4 drops on damp skin, morning and night, then cream and SPF. They told us about slip, tingle, glow, makeup hold. They told us when a mark felt softer at day 14 and evener at day 28. That is how we set texture and dose. Proof, for us, means tested where it will live. The Sephora Accelerate help with retailing, fulfilment, inventory and finance, plus the 30,000 dollar Glossier Grant for branding and imagery, helped us bring that proof to shelf, first online in September 2021, then to 261 stores by March 2023.

Eadem is Latin for the same or all, and your geography runs Cote dIvoire, France, Montreal, Beijing, New York, California, Tokyo and London. See how that shared root shows today in The Mark, Cashmere Peel and Sunsuede.

Eadem means the same, or also all. We loved that both meanings could feel true. Same soft touch, for all of us who carry marks. Same standards, across each formula.

The Mark, at 38 dollars, is our targeted dark spot concentrate with a gel patch feel that stays put. Where Milk Marvel covers the whole face, The Mark places high potency actives right where the spot sits. Cashmere Peel, full size 42 dollars and mini 20 dollars, is our milky exfoliant with FastFade care to clear pore look and refine feel in one sweep. Sunsuede, at 32 dollars, is our suede finish balm stick SPF from Korea that guards and primes in one swipe.

Different steps, same root. No bleaching agents. Fragrance free where stated. Tested with our community held in mind. More glow, not less color, from plant to polish.

Closing note from the desk

What lingers is touch. A milk that slips over damp skin, a cream with bounce, a mist that cools the afternoon, a stick with a suede dry down. Two founders with two histories held each texture to one test. Does it respect melanin-rich skin and does it fit a real day.

Eadem set out to serve that skin with plain language about marks. Soften the spot, keep the tone. That steady aim runs through serum, cream, mist and stick. The same care, for all.
